The director of a charter school in Silver City, New Mexico announced Saturday that three of school's students were killed in a plane crash that happened Friday afternoon.

New Mexico State Police said the pilot of a small aircraft was trying to land it when the plane burst into flames, killing the three students and the pilot.

The crash happened at 4:30 p.m. at the Whiskey Creek Airport.

A man who saw the plane go down said he knew he couldn't help.

"I ran over there to help whoever I could help, but I knew that was not going to happen because of the explosion," said Robert Huerta. "It was like a mini atomic bomb."

The names of the four people killed have not yet been released. Police said they are waiting for the medical investigator to confirm the identities, something that will not happen until Tuesday.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the cause of the crash.
