Thousands gathered in Sanford, Florida Thursday evening to express their outrage over the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.

Supporters joined his family in a call for justice and an arrest in the case.

Martin, carrying only a bag of candy and iced tea, was shot and killed in his stepmother's gated community by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman.

It has been almost a month since the shooting and still no arrest, despite growing questions about Zimmerman's claims of self-defense.

Florida Governor Rick Scott has assigned a new state attorney to the case and called for a task force to investigate the incident.

With the tension growing Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee announced he will temporarily step aside while the Martin shooting is investigated.

"I do this in the hopes of restoring some semblance of calm," Lee said.

The Department of Justice and the FBI are also launching their own investigations.

City commissioners have scheduled a public meeting to discuss the shooting next Monday.
