Sunland Park, NM — Thousands of Borderland residents made their way to Mount Cristo Rey in their annual pilgrimage to reaffirm their faith.
In years past we've seen thousands upon thousands hike up the Mountain despite some of the danger that may lie ahead.
"It's not scary but makes you take precaution. But nothing does happen but here not really," Gabriel Gonzales from Central El Paso told us. Gonzales says he makes the hike up Mount Cristo Rey annually. On their website, Mount Cristo Rey officials advise hikers to go in groups because of the mountain's proximity to Mexico, but that hasn't scared off thousands of the faithful who hike the 4.4 mile round trip to reaffirm their faith and to visit the 29-foot statue of Jesus Christ.
We even spoke with one teenager who was making the trip despite a sprained ankle and another man who has skipped work to make the hike.
Unlike 2012, they are not requiring people to pay a fee to hike Mount Cristo Rey. They are, however, asking for donations to help maintain the trail.
