Texas Secretary of State Hope Andrade is resigning effective Friday, her office has confirmed. Andrade has held the post since 2008, when her appointment by Gov. Rick Perry made her Texas' first Latina secretary of state.

“It has been the highest honor of my professional life to serve as the secretary of state for the greatest state in our nation,” Andrade said in a statement. “I am truly humbled by the trust and confidence Gov. Perry placed in me nearly four-and-a-half years ago and will forever be grateful for the opportunity to represent Texas in this esteemed office.”

Andrade presided over five Texas elections during her tenure as the state's highest-ranking elections official. Under Andrade's tenure, roughly 13.7 million Texans registered to vote in the last election.

"I remain dedicated to doing all I can to make sure that Texas is a place where we can encourage innovation, cultivate entrepreneurial success and reward hard work," she wrote in her resignation letter to Perry.
