Texas: Cell Phone Ban While Driving?
Texas could be the next state to ban cell-phone use while driving and that could be bad news for drivers who depend on their phones to make a living.
For people like Patsy Writesman having a cell phone at her side is the difference between having a job or not.
"If I didn't have a cell phone it would hinder me financially because some of the clients that call, they need a response pretty quickly to book someone," Writesman said.
Patsy is a public speaker and travels around the country on daily basis. Whether she's in the air or on the ground she admits travelling and talking on the phone can be a distraction.
"I do think it is a safety hazard, it truly concerns me the text messaging that goes on," Writesman said. "I do think accidents have gone up as a result of cell phones being used."
In 2001 TxDOT started tracking accidents involving cell phone use. They documented more than 1,000 crashes where cell phones were at least partially to blame.
By 2007 that number had tripled to more than 3,000 crashes.
This the issue is a hot topic in Austin. We found more than half a dozen bills being introduced this legislative session regarding the ban of cell phones while driving.
Here we go again. I'm afraid to pick my nose for fear of the nose police. What has happened to rights and freedoms. So what if I talk on my cell phone while driving. I've never had an accident as a result. And if I did, hold me responsible for causing the accident. When are we going to enforce the laws we have and stop making laws to govern every aspect of our lives. I'm glad smoking is disallowed in public places...but I don't agree with the law. There is too much control by the government. Let's have a smoking section. If smokers want to slowly kill themselves, let them. If cell phone users want to talk, let them. We can't prevent everything. If the cell phone is responsible, double the penalty, but quit telling me what I can or can't do.

10 months agoEl Paso is notorious for this. Pay close attention the next time you are driving on the street and you will note that over 50% of the drivers out there at any one time are on the phone. Either texting or talking while driving.
