El Paso- Whenever winter weather strikes the Borderland, a catchy little phrase should ring through your mind.
People, Plants, Pipes and Pets. Of course your order of importance might differ from others. The point of the four P's is to remind everyone they can avoid problems when the temperatures dip below freezing.
32º F. is the magic number and when that happens bring your pets inside for the night. Check your exterior pipes, make sure they are insulated. If you have outdoor plants, cover them or bring them inside. More importantly though, check on neighbors, the homeless and our elderly population.
Signs of hypothermia in adults include: Shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling of hands, memory loss, slurred speech and drowsiness.
Signs of hypothermia in infants: Very low energy and bright red, cold skin.
If you have noticed these signs in any person, check their temperature. If it's below 98º F, this is a serious medical condition and immediate assistance is required.
2-1-1 is another avenue of assistance. It's the number to call for help with blankets or heaters. If you know someone who needs these items to stay warm, just call the number.
Blankets are being accepted at all El Paso Fire Stations, but they are not being handed out from those locations.
