Texas teachers are preparing for the state's new big standardized test, the State of Texas assessments of academic readiness or he STAAR test.

For nearly ten years, the state of Texas has been requiring students to take the TAKS test, but come 2012 students will be taking the STAAR test.

"I think this test is a lot different than what I've seen in the past seven years I've been teaching. I think that they're not only going to have to know the knowledge they're going to have to use it in different ways," Scofield said.

The students will learn the same material, but will be tested in a different way.

"We're still teaching the same content, the rigor of how it's going to be tested will be changing in a deeper manner, more critical thinking, more open ended questions," Rose Cereceres from CISD said.

"Instead of a simple problem like 100 divided by 10, it would ask you the question, if you have 100 presents and 10 boxes how many presents would go into each box." Scofield said.

Teachers in the Canutillo Independent School District, like Amanda Scofield, have been training to prepare students for the new test for months, they're hoping their students will adapt.

"There will be multiple steps, they need to take their time and read and understand the question before answering," Scofield said.

While teachers say they're excited about STAAR, the biggest challenge will be getting students used to being under a tight deadline.

"It is a timed test, in the past they have had all day if they needed to complete the exam this year they will be required to finish that exam within four hours," Scofield said.

Students from elementary to high school will start taking the STAAR test as early as February.
