Tar Balls Hit Texas
GALVESTON, TX - Tar balls from the site of the gulf oil spill have apparently washed up in Galveston.
Over the weekend, the U.S. Coast Guard collected samples of the tar balls.
The agency says they were a positive match to the "Deepwater Horizon."
But coast guard leaders says the weathering of the tar balls is inconsistent with the oil that would have been transported naturally from the gushing well to the Texas coast...
"It's about 400 miles and in that time, the oil would be emulsified. These tarballs that we picked up were a little more tacky. So there's some other theories out there, that it potentially came in and balanced water from a ship, that it potentially stuck to the side of a ship and fell off as it was coming into Galveston, something like that."
The tar balls have been cleaned from Galveston beaches and the city has increased beach patrols.
