Every year thousands of pounds of drugs are seized at El Paso border crossings, in large part thanks to one talented K9.

Shake is an 8 year-old Malinois mix. Since 2006, he's detected more than 13,000 pounds of marijuana, nearly 400 pounds of cocaine, and 10 pounds of heroin.

Two of those busts have happened over the last two weeks. Shake is one of Customs and Border Protection's most efficient drug dogs in the country, but CBP officials say a dog is only as good as his handler.

"They're an outstanding team. Most handlers always want to give the credit to the dog and we do, but for shake, without richard, would not be what he is," said Danny Mendoza, CBP chief for the El Paso K9 section.

"I got hurt not too long ago and when i came back after two months he wouldn't leave my side, so i think he thought I abandoned him, so he's gotten a lot closer to me," said Shake's handler Richard Villegas.

Shake has also helped authorities seize almost a half million dollars in illegal property.
