People Endure Long Lines and Weather for Swine Flu Shot

October 28, 2009 - 5:24pm

At the northeast health center, people braved the cold, the rain and long lines to get the H1N1 vaccine. In the center of it all, a woman and her kids waited with everyone else.

"It's very unorganized."

Valerie Cambron brought her five kids, age 2 to 8, to the clinic early in the morning but didn't get inside until this afternoon.

"There was four other families that were behind me that were seen before I was all because I had to fill out paperwork for my children."

It took another hour before Valerie and her kids got in to get their shots. But once she saw how easy the process was, she couldn't believe it took her so long to get there.

"It should have been a lot faster for a thirty-second procedure. You go in you go out. People shouldn't be waiting out in the rain at all."

Valerie tells us she plans to call the Department of Health about her experience. From the looks of things, she might not be the only one.

It was ridiculous! I refer to We here—as the pregnant women, young children, and the others with various health issues! WE waited in line at the Sierra Teen Center at 110 Candelaria for hours in the cold wind and then it started raining it got colder and colder. Then we got rain mixed with ice particles. No restroom access until the porta potties were placed at a little after 2PM. Then at 6PM we got the news there was no more vaccine. Maybe in the future than these types of things get organized and planned out better. A gymnasium, the coliseum somewhere numbers can be given and a place to sit away from the elements. It escalated because people were cold, hungry, frustrated, tired and left uninformed. If my feet hurt, my whole body hurts and I cannot imagine how those poor pregnant women must be hurting right now.
I commend the Red Cross that arrived around 4PM and gone around to the different centers and brought us bottle water which was very welcomed.
