High Tech Gadgets Track Swine Flu

November 3, 2009 - 6:32pm

Ever since the Swine Flu was declared a worldwide pandemic, we've seen an overflow of information on who's at risk, vaccines, even ways to prevent getting the virus. But now, there's a way to get up to the minute info...from the palm of your hand.

"I believe it's serious."

Melissa Sanchez has been sick for a week. She just got back from a doctor's appointment where she found out she had Swine Flu. So the idea of being able to keep up with H1N1 news means a lot to her.

"Nationally, it really doesn't affect you, you really don't care. If it's somewhere out of the city, you really don't care. But once it hits here, you do."

Take the iPhone for example. In the "app store", a place to find programs for your phone, typing in "Swine Flu" will bring up dozens of programs having to do with the virus. Some allow you to track the number of cases and deaths worldwide. Others link to news articles about the flu. There are several that seek to help you diagnose your symptoms.

Not everybody believes in the technology.

"Technology at a certain point goes beyond what I think you need."

William Dueck says with the television, radio and internet, it's a case of information overload.

"I don't use it. I use my phone, I do texting. It took me a few years to learn to get around texting."

If you have the right equipment, you have the ability to keep Swine Flu at your fingertips...until the next big thing comes along.
