A west side synagogue's been hit by what the F.B.I. believes is a hate crime. Vandals spray-painted swastikas and other graffiti on the building over the weekend.
"Just hating because you hate, that shows that you are a miserable person. You have a problem, you need some help. Maybe we can help you," said Rabbi Yisrael Greeberg. "They bother themselves to look in the backyard, in the children's playground. That sends a very disturbing message."
A swastika was also painted on an outdoor globe. Remnants of the damage are still visible. Other graffiti, with an unknown meaning, was painted on the walls.
"Our mission is to overcome the evil with goodness,"said Greenberg.
"Civil rights is a very high priority. It's something that we take very seriously," said F.B.I. Special Agent Andrea Simmons. "It's not something in any kind of community you can overlook."
The F.B.I. is investigating this as a possible hate crime.
The Rabbi says he's going to use this incident to teach his congregation a valuable lesson for Hanukkah. "I tell em' we still have a lot of work in increasing light above the darkness," said Greenberg. He says a little bit of light goes a long way in the darkness, and adds the vandalism has less to do with hate, and more to do with a lack of respect.
