New information in the case of an El Paso Police officer who shot and killed a man in the Lower Valley over the weekend.

Police have identified the man as 39 year-old Anthony Gonzalez from Socorro.

Police say Gonzalez was trying to steal a keg of beer from the 7-11 on Socorro road in the Lower Valley.

Officer Raul Melendez, reportedly approached Gonzalez and identified himself.

Melendez claims as he was trying to arrest Gonzalez, the suspect lunged at him with a knife.

That is when Melendez says he shot Gonzalez, who died at the scene.

The investigation into the shooting continues.
