LAS CRUCES - An El Paso native is going to be the next governor of New Mexico.

Susana Martinez will be the first Latina governor in U.S. history, defeating Diane Denish in last night's election.

Martinez supporters crowded a Las Cruces hotel waiting for the candidate to step up to the podium and make her win official.

Finally, after all the major networks projected Martinez the victor, she walked up to the microphone around 10:30 last night and declared victory with grace and humility.

"I would like to take a moment to acknowledge Diane Denish for her service to our great state. At the end of the day, New Mexicans chose a new direction and I thank them, and I thank them for their trust and their courage."

Whining El Paso Democrats have always wanted to secede from Texas and join New Mexico, because Texas was too Republican. Where do they want to go now? Old Mexico?
