Sunland Park Once Again, Mayorless
SUNLAND PARK, NM - The citizens of Sunland Park once again, find themselves without a mayor.
Javier Perea was appointed to the city's top position last week by the council; but the state of New Mexico is stepping in and nullifying the appointment. The state attorney general said the city violated the Open Meetings Act.
The New Mexico Attorney General's office said too many people were left outside the special council meeting last week, and couldn't hear what went on inside.
In a letter from the state Attorney General to the city council and the newly-appointed mayor, Gary King said Sunland Park has to start searching for a new mayor again.
Javier Perea might still win the job, but Sunland Park needs to have another town hall meeting, with a lot of space this time.
