It’s a sexually transmitted disease that may be deadly for women. Now, U.S. researchers say half of men in the general population may be infected with human papillomavirus, or HPV.
HPV is the human wart virus that causes cervical and other cancers in women. Scientists say the new research may make the case for vaccinating boys against the disease.
HPV infection is known as the primary cause of cervical cancer—the second most common cancer in women. However, various strains of HPV also cause anal, penile, head and neck cancers.
Over 1,000 men in the United States, Brazil and Mexico were used to conduct the study.
The study was published in the journal, Lancet.
