El Paso - A big achievement for two Parkland High School seniors.

They beat out thousands of other students in a national essay contest.

Karla Castillo and Erica Perales are runners-up in the AT&T Job Shadow Essay Competition.

The students said their essays focused on how the job shadow program has prepared them for careers...

"It was an essay about learning to push yourself forward and overcome any obstacles that are in your way and to push yourself to be a better person"

"I wrote about opportunities and how I'm going to succeed in my future."

Their teacher talked about the reward of winning the national contest...

"Now they get to see that their hard work pays off. And there's programs out there that expose them to opportunities such as these. It's awesome."

So far, the AT&T job shadow program has paired 23,000 students with AT&T employees around the country.

The goal is to reduce the high school dropout rate.
