Students Take STAAR Test for the First Time
EL PASO — Eastlake High School students took their first STAAR test.
"They felt pretty confident going in and they felt more confident coming out which is a really really good sign for us. So they felt really prepared," said Angelica Ramsey, the principal at Eastlake High School.
The STAAR test begins in the third grade. Gilbert Widner, a fourth grader, takes his first STAAR exam tomorrow.
"Nervous, but I know I'll pass it because my teacher has taught me everything I need to know," said Widner.
The teachers started preparing students long ago for this test.
"Well a lot of it we don't really focus on the test itself. I know within the last couple of years or so our content has changed," said Laura Widner, an Eastlake teacher.
Eastlake student Alexis Lazcano says he's prepared for the new test which replaces the TAKS test.
"It went really good it was a lot more challenging than the TAKS but it was still doable. I do believe that the STAAR test will better help us go ahead and reach college work because it does require us to think more,"said Lazcano.
The test for high schoolers is called EOC or end of course. Students need to pass 12 in order to graduate.
