Highland Elementary students got the opportunity to take a tour through the Bomb Squad mobile unit and learn about remote control technology used to locate explosives. A K-9 Deputy named Rex also assisted in educating the third graders by sniffing out a cotton ball that had been swabbed with explosive material.

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad is one of several tactical resources available to the department, and is assisted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. They routinely respond to bomb threats and SWAT situations.

The unit has assisted Las Cruces Public Schools with several Career Day and Career Week demonstrations in the past several weeks.
