Students Get Sick at Brown Middle School

December 17, 2008 - 5:18pm

Students from Brown Middle School in West El Paso have been complaining about the smell of raw sewage since last year. Now their parents wonder "why" the problem hasn't been fixed.

At a meeting with EPISD Administrators, some parents demanded answers to why the school is having problems with a foul smell in its halls. Parents say their children are coming home sick, complaining of things like burning eyes and sore throats.

The school district has been battling this "smelly" problem since last year. They've hired air quality experts to test the air and engineers to check the plumbing but have found no cause.

Experts say the odor is from hydrogen sulfide, a gas found in sewer gasses. They say the gas is present in "low levels" and are not enough to make kids sick.

EPISD Administrators told Newschannel 9 they are working hard not only to fix the problem, but to get rid of the smell permanently.
