The City of El Paso's Department of Public Health announced two local residents were confirmed to have been infected with cyclospora.

The announcement comes in the wake of a multi-state outbreak, with a total of 122 cases reported in Texas. Epidemiologists in El Paso were currently investigating the two cases of the disease that causes prolonged diarrhea, which may last weeks or even months, loss of appetite and fatigue.

The disease is generally not deadly, and so far it doesn't appear these cases are part of the national or statewide outbreak. One of the two patients affected by the disease traveled outside the country, and may have contracted the parasite there.

Diagnosis of the disease requires the submission of stool samples. Health officials urge El Pasoans to report any related symptoms to their doctor.
