Many parts of the borderland are bracing for more rain including residents of Socorro, who are worried a faulty dam could break and flood their homes.

The thirteen foot dam was near its breaking point.

"Es una bomba de tiempo, porque viene mucha agua no le van a parar," said Jesus Chavez, a 45-year resident of Socorro.

Jesus Ruiz has been the mayor of Socorro for a little more than two months, but he's already dealing with an issue flooded with controversy since 2006.

"The idea was that the sand would hold the water so that it would not flood anymore, and obviously sand doesn't hold water very long. Several constituents expressed that to Mr. Lopez, however the plan remained," said Ruiz.

Crews worked quickly to channel the water out of the dam to a nearby canal, hoping to prevent it from overflowing into nearby neighborhoods.

One neighborhood, literally next door to the dam is where Willie Torres and Josie Vargas moved just two months ago. They said they were fairly warned of what happens when it rains.

"The place gets really flooded, really ugly. They even have to use canoes, every now and then," said Vargas.

But Vargas thought maybe it was an exaggeration until she saw for herself how quickly a flash flood can affect her neighborhood.

“Completely flooded and you couldn't even walk around the house. It's a safety hazard for us in case it did break because of over flooding,” said Willie Torres.
