Many in the City of Socorro are hoping three new council members will mark the beginning of a new era.

On Tuesday night, Sergio Cox was elected the new council member for District 1, Gloria Macias Rodriguez was elected council member for District 2, and Victor Perez was elected the new council member for District 3.

Socorro's Mayor Jesus Ruiz said the community wants to move forward from its troubled past with local lawmakers.

Just a couple weeks ago, the City of Socorro removed street signs bearing the names of former city councilmen Jesse Gandara Jr. and Willie Madrid.

The Gandara family was synonymous with Socorro for many years but their legal troubles tarnished the city's reputation.

Former Mayor Willie Gandara Sr. pleaded guilty this summer to wire fraud charges.
His son, former Mayor Willie Gandara Jr. plead guilty in 2012 to federal drug trafficking charges and is now behind bars.

And this year, councilman Jesse Gandara, Jr. was arrested and charged with stealing property -- along with several other charges.

Mayor Jesus Ruiz says he hopes the city can now wipe the slate clean with new players in government.

"I think the people of Socorro let their voice be heard tonight. I think they elected three candidates by, you know, a large number. And so I think we need to respect the voice of the people, and the candidates that they chose to be the leaders of Socorro tonight," said Ruiz.

The three new council members are set to be sworn in on Thursday.
