Socorro Cancels Special Meeting After Mayor Resigns
Socorro, TX — A big shake-up continues to unravel in Socorro.
Mayor Trini Lopez resigned unexpectedly on Sunday, just days before a special council meeting.
The council had planned to to take a closer look Wednesday into the mayor's purchase of city property. Mayor Pro Tem Mary Garcia has called out Mayor Lopez for what she calls inappropriate businesses practices, and the City of Socorro is investigating those claims.
That special meeting was cancelled now that a formal acceptance of Trini Lopez's resignation will also be on the agenda. That information needs to be publicized at least 72 hours before a meeting is held.
A city spokesperson said all of those items will be on the normal agenda next Thursday.
"You know he can say whatever he wants as far as his departure goes, you know, what his reasons were, but as far as we're concerned, I truly believe that it was the investigation that he's undergoing right now that prompted him to you know submit his abrupt resignation," Garcia said.
Garcia said she is not interested in taking the position permanently. The city itself would have to come up with money to fund a special election, which could be costly. As it stands they might wait until november 2013 to choose a permanent mayor, at that point they would not have to pay for an election themselves.
