A fight is brewing over some land in far east El Paso County. The city of Socorro is hoping to annex several parcels of county property, including land surrounding the El Paso landfill. Concerned El Paso and Socorro residents have packed city meetings lately to express concerns with the plan. Some El Paso city officials say the proposed land annexation would prevent the landfill from expanding, which is something the city had hoped to one day do.

"We're expect to continue operating at the El Paso landfill, without any interruptions or any service issues in the El Paso and surrounding areas," said Kurt Fenstermacher with the city's Environmental Services Department.

Socorro has between 20 and 40 days to make a decision to acquire the land.

Looks like El Paso County's nasty cousin (Socorro) is up to some greedy land grabing, to the dislike of residents of San Elizarion and potentially to the detriment of the entire County. I have heard County officials express concern over the future ramifications of Socorro's land annexation desires, but so far nothing from Mayor Cook or any city representaives. I guess besides Cook not being a plumber, he is also not a planner and since he is a lame duck mayor, he doesn't care about the landfill.
