Calls to quit smoking help lines doubled two weeks after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released their new anti-smoking campaign.
The new ads feature former smokers who are living with smoking-related illnesses, like cancer, heart disease and stroke.
Call volumes to quitlines went from 14,000 calls per week to nearly 35,000 calls over a two-week period.
Past studies have shown at least five to six people try to quit on their own for every one person who calls a quitline.
Experts say the ads are difficult to watch, but they appear to be helping smokers quit.
The ads will run for at least twelve weeks on t-v, radio, online and in newspapers.
