Fire crews were battling a massive house fire in Santa Teresa, New Mexico. Fire officials said that a fire that started in an arroyo behind Santa Teresa Middle School spread into a structure at Cervantes. Winds then carried the fire to another home on Comerciantes.

Multiple fire agencies from several towns were on the scene and residents in the Portsmouth and Meadowlark areas off of Montoya were being evacauted. The Red Cross of ElPaso tweeted that they were responding to the fires to provide canteen service for firefighters and residents.

The fire started around 4:20 Monday afternoon as a house fire. It quickly spread into brush in a canal near the homes, which acted as kindling and caused several trees to catch fire. Firefighters said hot ash from the winds helped spread the blaze.

Crews were battling the fire from two sides.

Our reporter on scene said the fire spread an entire block in less than a half hour.
