A Dec. 4 deadline looms for a group hoping to save the Asarco smokestacks, and the city could be what saves the old landmark.

City council is expected to consider a resolution that would make the Asarco property the city's responsibility. The group drafted the resolution which states:

"The City of El Paso announces its intention to receive ownership in fee of the historically, architecturally and culturally significant chimneys and a small area of land to provide access to the site."

The group "Save the Stacks" will present the results from a study done on the smokestacks at a press conference Wednesday.

A city council meeting was not planned during Thanksgiving week, so the resolution will be debated at the Nov. 27th meeting, exactly one week before the smokestacks future will be decided.
