The Socorro Independent School District is arming their teachers with smart tablets and they say this move will help them engage their students in learning. SISD is currently handing out 2,500 to all of their teachers, librarians, and instructional coaches.

Students at Rojas elementary school are learning about black ice through a smart device. "Without using a tablet it's boring. And like, just reading books and that,” Manny Ceniceros a 5th grade student at the school says.

And through the magic of the internet -- They're able to peer into a world that is hundreds of miles away.
Teachers use the tablets to supplement their lesson plans. "Right now, black ice, we looked it up and it's something that I didn't know what it was."

The smart tablet is funded thanks to a 2011 bond.

"And the tablet takes them through different parts of the nation. Just through pictures, through googling,” Luz Arrellano, a SCI-E Coach at SISD says.

Socorro administrators say they are hoping mobile technology will help all of their more than 44,000 students in the classroom. It's a cheaper alternative to computers. Each tablet cost the district about $97. "The aim is for our students to be eventually lifelong learners and be able to make their own conclusions about information that they get,” Miguel Moreno, the Coordinator for Instructional Technology at SISD explains.

Only some Socorro schools have access to these tablets. "It helps our instruction because it helps us keep the students engaged,” Arrellano told us.

Administrators say they are hoping to distribute one tablet per teacher by February 10th. "It makes me feel good. I like learning new things,” Ceniceros explained.

The 2011 bond -- which tops $297-million is what will be used for the smart tablets.
