SISD back to school: 2 new campuses at capacity
El Paso, TX (KTSM) — Thousands of students in the Socorro Independent School District will be back in the classroom on Monday, and for many of them, that classroom will be in a brand new school.
James P. Butler Elementary and SSG Manuel R. Puentes Middle School are combo schools for kindergarten through eighth grade students.
SISD Assistant Superintendent of Administrative Services Pat O'Neill said the district is expecting about 1,000 new students this school year, partly due to all of the new homes going up east of Zaragoza and Joe Battle.
The new campuses will accommodate 2,000 students, but O'Neill said the new schools are already at capacity and people who live in that area who have not registered their children have to go to other schools.
"Maybe the school where the kid lives is at capacity, and you send them to another campus that has room. We call that process the overflow process. If you look around the state, this is a common practice for fast-growing schools," said O'Neill.
O'Neill said the district provides transportation for students who are sent to another campus.
He also said a new school will open in Sparks next year, and another school will open north of Montana the year after that.
