Should El Paso taxpayers pick up the tab for legal fees that Mayor John Cook racked up while fighting a recall effort?

That's a debate that city council will take up next week.

Mayor Cook argues he's entitled to more than a half million dollars from the city because the city gave him bad legal advice.

A recall group tried to have cook and two city reps removed after they voted to restore health benefits for gay and unmarried partners of city employees.

The 8th Court of Appeals ultimately ruled the recall group violated law by circulating petitions in churches.

Cook says he still owes almost $580,000 in legal bills.

Cook should pay for his own legal fees. He says the city gave him bad advice. He needs to look up the definition of the word. It was his choice to either take or reject the advice. That his lawyer got it right is why people need to hire their own lawyers. The court already ordered Tom Brown to pay Cook (er his lawyer) $8,000 and I did not read anything about anyone else having to pay for Cook's legal costs except Cook himself. If you can't take the heat then you should not seek public office.
