LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Las Cruces Police arrested shooting suspect Cornelius "Corn" Renteria, 34, one day after they said he have shot his former girlfriend at least twice at a North Las Cruces home Wednesday morning.

He faces charges of attempted murder.

The shooting happened just after 10:30 a.m. on Holly Drive near the Elks Drive intersection.

Police believe a 27-year-old woman and Renteria were arguing when things escalated and he shot the woman at least twice in the right shoulder area.

Renteria then took off on foot headed west on Holly Drive into an undeveloped area, according to police.

The woman's injuries do not appear to be life-threatening and she was taken to a hospital in El Paso for treatment.
