Officials: Pre-teen shooter stopped by school staff member

According to NBC affilliate KOB, a 12-year-old boy is in state police custody after a shooting at Berrendo Middle School in Roswell.

At a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, New Mexico State Police said the seventh grader opened fire on a group of students in the gymnasium before school started.

New Mexico State Police and local law enforcement rushed to the Berrendo Middle School shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Gov. Susana Martinez confirmed a 12-year-old boy is in critical condition at a hospital in Lubbock, Texas. A 13-year-old girl also suffered injuries and is listed in serious condition at the same hospital.

Gov. Martinez also said a staff member suffered minor injuries when he told the student to put down the gun. He was not taken to the hospital.

"Please don't forget this community is a strong community, they will pull together there is no doubt," Gov. Martinez said.  A prayer vigil will be held at Roswell Convention Center at 6 p.m. tonight.

New Mexico State Police officials said local authorities were dispatched to the school at 8:11 a.m.  A short time later, a post on the Roswell Police Department Facebook page said the shooter was apprehended at the school.

A parent also spoke with the tv station, saying "It was scary, it was freaky," Kathy Sigala said. "I didn't understand. I got a call from where I work and I was at home. I just got in my car and my daughter came with the other kids... And I just came here and we heard from police...but we're just grateful for Roswell, RPD, for their fast reaction in getting there and taking care of what they have to take of...we just can't believe that it would happen here."
