The Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley is adopting out pit bulls for free this month in observance of Pit Bull Awareness month.

The center has more than 50 pit bulls for adoption and it's the most common breed found at the center in large part because of their reputation.

"It's all about how you raise them for the most part," said Paul Richardson who works with the center.

Richardson said if dogs are trained to be vicious or are abused they will be mean but the dogs available for adoption are friendly.

"We certainly don't adopt out any dogs that we feel are a danger to other dogs." Richardson said. "The dogs that we have available for adoption have shown no signs of aggression to other people or other dogs."

The center screens applicants very carefully to make sure the dogs go to good homes.

All dogs will be spayed or neutered before adoption.

The shelter will also waive adoption fees for any dog that has been at the shelter for more than 6 months.
