Mattox served as Commissioner, County Judge

Services for former County Commissioner, then County Judge Chuck Mattox have been announced.

Family members say services will be held starting at 1p.m. at the Church of St. Clement, located at 810 North Campbell.

In an on-line obituary, written by former El Paso County Democratic Chairman Rick Melendrez, Mattox's career highlights were shared.

Melendrez writes, "As a west side County Commissioner Mattox built Gallegos Park in Canutillo, installed safety ramps for runaway trucks on Transmountain Road and initiated grants for a water system in Westway.

As County Judge, Mattox felt he was the CEO, running a multi million dollar business. He had a no nonsense approach and attitude. He brought an end to the antics at Commissioners Court.

Judge Mattox built the much needed jail annex on the east side, alleviating overcrowding which gave dignity to both detention officers and prisoners."

According to an El Paso Times article, Mattox was defeated in his re-election bid in 1998.

The article goes on to state that "he (Mattox) blamed his 1998 defeat in the Democratic primary on an investigation into a contract to build a cardiac care unit at Thomason Hospital, now known as University Medical Center. He was later cleared by a state district court grand jury of any wrong doing."

Family member say that, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Texas Rangers Association Foundation Scholarship Fund, Waco, Texas.
