Senator Eliot Shapleigh's camp released a statement today telling Governor Rick Perry to "quit blaming President Obama for Border security - El Paso is safer than ever."

This was after the Governor handed President Obama a letter urging him to place an extra 1,000 National Guard troops on the border with Mexico at his appearance at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The President was in the state to discuss the importance of education to a powerful economy in a speech at UT Austin.

In the statement, Shapleigh calls Perry's communication attempts "gimmicks" and said he is falsely announcing that there is violence in El Paso to drive up polls.

Last week, in reference to the governor's comments that a car bomb went off in El Paso, Perry's office wrote News Channel 9 saying:

"The governor was referring to the car bomb that went off in Juarez just across from El Paso. As we have all seen, violence in northern Mexico has continued to escalate and presents a serious threat to our border communities."

Shapleigh also attacked Arizona governor Jan Brewer on her statements that there were beheadings in Arizona.
