A semi truck carrying a truckload of ice cream slid off of I-10 and was hanging from an overpass for several hours Monday morning.

It happened at 3:26 a.m. along I-10 East between Paisano and Trowbridge. The truck driver was traveling on I-10 East when he lost control and drove through the guardrail onto Gateway East below.  Police believe the slick, wet roads from overnight rain played a role in the crash.

Police said the driver was not injured in the crash. He was seen walking around the scene of the crash, but was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

The truck was traveling from Albuquerque to deliver the load of ice cream to C.F. Heller Distributing in East El Paso.

Two tow trucks with cranes and harnesses were on the scene for hours attempting to clear the scene.

The truck was lowered from the overpass onto Gateway East shortly before 7:00 a.m. and was turned upright a few minutes later.

Firefighters remained on the scene throughout the entire process, and were seen placing dirt onto the street after an unknown fluid starting leaking out of the front of the tractor.

Gateway East between Paisano and Trowbridge, including the Trowbridge exit off of I-10 East, was closed for several hours while crews cleared the semi truck and cleaned up remaining debris.

There was extensive damage to the guardrail that will be repaired.  Concrete from the overpass was also seen crumbling as the semi truck was being moved.
