UTEP and NMSU are working together to improve the water in colonias in both Texas and New Mexico.

Civil engineers and health psychologists have teamed up to find out what is in the tap water in each home studied and to find the best over-the-counter solutions to make it safe to drink.

They tested filtration systems from local hardware stores ranging in price from $50 to $300.

Once each family finds the best system for their home, they will help UTEP researchers install the device so they can easily fix it when needed.

"We believe that there are filters and products that are available that can be used to save people money that they could have a lower cost of water in their home by using these filters and maintaining these filters rather than having to purchase purified water at the store," said Shane Walker, an Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering.
