El Paso, TX (KTSM) — A local professor was named the Educator of the Year by the Texas Occupational Therapy Association (TOTA).
Eugenia Gonzalez, Ph.D., assistant professor of occupational therapy received her recognition at the association's annual conference on Nov. 9.
Gonzalez joined UTEP in 2009.
Her research focus is on improving outcomes for children with disabilities and enhancing learning experiences for health sciences students.
Since 2011, Gonzalez has traveled with students from the College of Health Sciences to Guatemala as part of an interdisciplinary service-learning course on global health.
Gonzalez recently completed a project with UTEP's Community and Academic Partnerships for Health Sciences Research (CAPHSR) program that looked at the early surveillance practices of pediatricians in El Paso to improve early identification and referral to therapeutic services for children with developmental delays, such as autism disorders.
At the TOTA conference, Gonzalez presented her project on an intervention study that looked to improve the emotional well-being of mothers of children with disabilities using an emotive writing experience.
