The Socorro Independent School District is celebrating all of its outstanding educators this week in honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week, including the district’s Campus Teachers of the Year who were recognized at the teacher of the year gala on May 2.

The top two 2014 SISD Teachers of the Year were named at the annual gala. Amanda Casillas-Saucedo, from James P. Butler Elementary School, and Luis Pablo Ramirez, from Montwood High School, earned the prestigious honor at the celebration at the El Paso Performing Arts and Convention Center.

More than 1,000 people attended the event. Each school’s Campus Teacher of the Year was recognized at the gala, including those who were selected as Elite 8 finalists.

Casillas-Saucedo, who is the district’s elementary teacher of the year, has been a fifth grade teacher for 10 years. Her social work background influenced her perspective to make a difference in the lives of children.

Ramirez, who is the top SISD secondary teacher of the year, is an engineer and math instructor who embraced education as a second career. He is one of the sponsors of the Rams successful robotics team.

The district elementary and secondary winners will represent SISD in the Region 19 Teacher of Year 2015 competition, scheduled for Aug. 9 at the convention center.
