Three student organizations in the New Mexico State University College of Health and Social Services received a grant for Affordable Care Act education.

The College of Health and Social Services Student Ambassadors, Student Nurses' Association and Public Health Student Organization each received $3,000 to provide literature and information on enrolling in healthcare coverage to NMSU's student body on the Las Cruces campus through the New Mexico Health Insurance Exchange grant.

The student groups are coordinating their outreach activities with the NMSU Southern Area Health Education Center (SoAHEC) and are required to hold at least five events on campus before the end of March.

"The student groups from the College of Health and Social Services and SoAHEC are the perfect fit for this type of education and outreach," said Beatriz Favela, SoAHEC program operations director. "We feel this is an important initiative in New Mexico, because we've never had the opportunity for everyone to get coverage. We want people to take advantage and not wait until the last minute."

The groups were required to participate in training and planning sessions with SoAHEC that included information on messaging, use of materials and the Affordable Care Act. Additionally, the student groups have corresponded with the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center Office of Community Health on this project.

"It's easy when you are young and healthy not to think about insurance, but we want our students to be informed and enroll in health care in a timely matter to avoid possible fines after the March 31 deadline."
