U.S. Representative Pete P. Gallego (D-Alpine) announced a $475,000 federal grant for migrant workers and family members of seasonal farmworkers to help them earn a GED.

The federal funds are made available through the Department of Education’s High School Equivalency Program (HEP).

“Education is the greatest equalizer – students who want to build our communities deserve equal opportunities to succeed in life,” U.S. Rep. Gallego said. “We welcome any chance to help these individuals improve their lives and the lives of their loved ones.

These federal funds also help sustain and create education-related jobs in El Paso and strengthen the education community here.”

The purpose of HEP is to help migrant and seasonal farmworkers and members of their immediate family obtain a general education diploma that meets the guidelines for high school equivalency established by the state of Texas.

The grant is also designed to help these individuals gain employment or be placed in an institution of higher education, other postsecondary education or training.
