The Canutillo Independent School District Board of Trustees recently approved the selection of Tangela Carter as the new principal at Gonzalo & Sofia Garcia Elementary School.

She will begin her tenure in the District in July.

Carter is a former principal and classroom teacher who currently serves as a director in the Dallas Independent School District’s Mulit-Language Enrichment Program.

“Ms. Carter brings a heightened level of expertise and a different perspective into our approach to education,” said Superintendent Pedro Galaviz. “I am confident that Garcia Elementary will continue to thrive under her leadership, and that the parents and students in that community will welcome her with open arms.”

Carter will take over for Sheryl Maxsom, who is retiring at the end of the school year after four years as principal.

“I am very excited about arriving in Canutillo and getting to work with the wonderful team of teachers at Garcia Elementary,” Carter said. “I want to make sure that everything we do as a team is child centered and data driven, and that our campus works well as a team in order to reach our goal of excellence.”

Carter is fluent in Spanish, and earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Texas at Arlington and a master’s in education from the University of North Texas in Denton.

She currently is completing coursework for a doctorate degree in educational leadership with a focus in supervision, curriculum and instruction.
