LAS CRUCES (KTSM) — The New Mexico State University men's basketball team now know who they're playing in the NCAA Tournament and fans are feeling good.
Sunday was part celebration and part preparation at the Game Sports Bar & Grill in Las Cruces as the team is going dancing.
The Aggies got back from the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in Las Vegas, and the team went straight to their watch party with family, friends and more than 100 fans.
Aggie fans couldn't pass up the chance to hear that the NMSU will be playing San Diego State at the NCAA Tournament
They said the latest WAC Tournament win is the perfect ending to another great season.
"It's always good when you see a good effort and our young men are rewarded with a good win,” said Linda Kutinac. “They played hard and now they get to dance."
Linda, and her husband John, followed the Aggies to Las Vegas. They got back Sunday afternoon and decided to complete their trip by joining the team at the watch party.
"To see the team’s reaction, to see where they are going to end up going," John said.
Emilio Garcia and his dad watched the Aggies play from home. But Sunday, they wanted to experience the excitement up close and personal.
"I thought it would be cool to come and see all the players. To see their reactions to the tournament,” said Emilio.
Having a successful season gives some NMSU fans a reason to brag.
"To me it is a big deal. As small as Las Cruces is, we are actually known for a lot of stuff. Basketball is one of them,” said fan James Hall. “It is kind of exciting to be a part of it."
When Head Coach Marvin Menzies addressed the crowd, he gave them confidence that this could be the year the basketball team goes for a big win.
“We want a win and we want to win bad. If we come up short, no doubt it was a great season. We have already done that,” Menzies said. “But the opportunity to win a game in the NCAA is right now in front of us.”
And fans said they'll cheer their Aggies on till the very end.
"We get to watch them move forward and wish them lots of success," the Kutinac’s said.
The team plays against San Diego State at Spokane, Washington, Thursday, March 20.
