HORIZON CITY--- The new school year will be here before you know it and that means hardship for some parents.
But there's help on the way, thanks to three Socorro Independent School District moms.
"We were seeing kids walk through the hallways.. They just kind of held their heads down, kind of hiding their clothes," said Eva Valles, one of three mome who started a School Uniform Swap.
She said she realized parents can't always afford to buy new uniforms for their kids.
"It all gets expensive, and then what do we do with them? We donate them to thrift stores where they're making a dollar out of it, when we can help each other (instead)," she said.
So the moms decided to start the swap, and with the help of National Self Storage branch owner Blanca Garcia, they began to collect used school uniforms from parents in school districts all across el paso county.
The idea is to swap them for other slightly used clothes at a formal exchange July 18th at the American Legion Post No. 598, 13000 Horizon Blvd.
Once they donate, parents receive a voucher to take with them to the exchange.
"If we could help those 10 kids we've helped 10 kids. And so far, I think we're able to help a lot more than that," said Valles.
In less than three weeks, the moms have collected more than 1,800 school uniform garments, among other things.
From writing paper, pencils, backpacks, and even water bottles, the ladies are collecting even first-day-of-school essentials for needy children.
While they'll continue to take more donations through next week, the ladies have a lot of work to sort out now.
They plan to wash and mend every piece of clothing that needs it before they're swapped out.
