Two high school graduates in Doña Ana County have been awarded scholarship funds by the New Mexico Sheriff’s Association.

Doña Ana County Sheriff Todd Garrison and Deputy Michelle Ugalde, who heads the department’s Community Policing Division, awarded checks for $400 each to Cassie Gallegos, who recently graduated from Las Cruces High School, and Jesus Medrano, a graduate of Gadsden High School.

Gallegos, 18, finished with a 3.99 GPA and said she plans to study animal science at New Mexico State University in the fall.

“I have always been interested in agriculture,” Gallegos said. “It is the foundation of our country, and is vital to our future both globally and right here in Doña Ana County.”

Gallegos is a member of the National Honor Society and has received numerous awards through her affiliation with the Las Cruces Chapter of Future Farmers of America and Doña Ana County 4-H.

Medrano, 19, finished high school with an overall 3.07 GPA and also plans to attend NMSU in the fall.

“I want to study biochemistry and criminal justice,” Medrano said. “My ultimate dream is to pursue a career in law enforcement with the Federal Bureau of Investigations, and this scholarship puts me one step closer to that.”

Medrano served as the president of the Gadsden High School Chapter of the National Honor Society and was actively involved as a volunteer with the New Mexico Department of Public Safety Police Explorers as a senior sergeant.

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department is a member of the New Mexico Sheriff’s Association, the oldest police association of its kind in New Mexico. Through fundraising efforts, the association provides scholarships annually for high school students statewide who demonstrate a commitment to education, community and public service.
