Many scammers increase their efforts around the holiday season thinking they can tug at people's heart strings. But there are ways to detect fraudulent calls and e-mails.

Anabelle Estrada from the Better Business Bureau says their office gets many calls about "grandparent" scams, when people target the elderly, pose as their grandchildren, and ask them to wire money.
