Christmas may be over but were shoppers gearing up for post-holiday sales? Retailers are offering hotter sales to try and keep people shopping.

Some retail analysts say shoppers started this holiday season off in a great spending mood but after Hurricane Sandy and tension over the fiscal cliff, consumers began holding back.

Other experts say it's too early to tell whether holiday sales will increase or decrease in comparison to last year. Research firm "Shoppertrak" estimates sales will go down by 1% compared to last year. But The International Council of Shopping Centers predicts holiday sales at chain stores will rise 3% this year.

Foot traffic was heavy at Cielo Vista Mall today but NewsChannel 9 spoke to many shoppers who seemed very bargain-conscious, and said they weren't in a hurry to buy. Others simply came to return Christmas gifts they didn't like.

"I got a pair of very ugly Nike shoes and I'm hoping to return them," said Karen Campos.

Many shoppers at the Mall said they already did their Christmas shopping early this year and spent most of their money on Black Friday deals.

Analysts say the increase in online shopping may also be a reason why less people are spending money in stores.
