EL PASO - Downtown El Paso's San Jacinto Plaza is one step closer to getting a big makeover.

Today, city council voted to get the plaza's re-design off the ground. The design, by SWA Landscape Architecture is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, but it's being given to the city free of charge, to help with the project.

"Everything around it is changing, but yet, San Jacinto Plaza is somehow stuck, this re-design is going to really be the complete transformation of downtown, and I think the community is looking forward to that kind of change," said Gerdo Aquino, from SWA.

"More green space, a better use of that park space that we can do programming and events, hold small concerts and events there, more trees and...a park that we can truly be proud of," said City Representative Beto O'Rourke.

Meantime, voters could see a bond election in November, to decide if the city should fund the new look.
