The historical San Elizario chapel is being restored not only to preserve the chapel but to keep parishioners safe.
The church is 128 years old and is in need of construction. Cracks in the walls and crumbling adobe are just some of the problems. It is going to cost the church at least $200,000 to refurbish. Some of the money is coming in the form of a loan from the Catholic Diocese.
But, the community knows that this may not be enough. Ramon Holguin gives tours for the Mission Trails and the chapel.
"We should fix it because this is part of our history not only our community or Texas but the United States as a whole. Having celebrated the first Thanksgiving here in April 30, 1598 that means a lot to some people," Holguin said.
This isn't the first problem for San Elizario, the chapel has survived a lot in the past including a fire in 1935.
